A special thank you for all the volunteers who manned
the stores on July 5th, 2008. They all took a day out
of their holiday weekend to serve.
Thank you to Phyllis, Jo, Lisa, Woody and Randy.
At our July 5th "Treats For Troops" fundraiser at Safeway, Long's, Bruno's, and K-Mart in Lakeport
we raised $1.049.00.
The funds pay for items to be sent overseas to troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. We get feedback from
soldiers as to what they would like to receive in the care packages, which include a wide variety of items
such as artificial tears that help the soldiers combat fiercely dry desert winds that blow sand in their
faces, as well as food, powdered drink mix, and personal hygiene accessories.
Lisa is the leader and founder the "Treats for Troops" program and "Project Comfort", and shops around
town for the needed items before they are packaged by the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and Post Members and are
sent in the mail to the troops.
PROJECT COMFORT
Through our contact, in Treats for Troops, with Susan and Joe Fil, the
parents of Lt. General Fil, our Project Comfort program is going strong. Project Comfort
involves supporting our wounded soldiers with hand made quilts, patriotic blankets, homemade cookies, and
encouragement for their mothers. Susan took three hand made quilts and 15 lap blankets the other day to the
Palo Alto Veterans Hospital.

Project Comfort involves supporting our wounded soldiers with patriotic blankets, homemade cookies, and
encouragement for their mothers.
A year ago our auxiliary began sending care packages in our Treats for Troops project. That is how
we met Susan Fil, whose son is in Iraq. She told us how many soldiers were coming home wounded and in need
of encouragement.
So Project Comfort began in May, with Major General Joseph Fil's mother, Susan delivering 12 patriotic
blankets to the Palo Alto Veteran's Hospital. The ladies in our auxiliary made red, white, and blue quilts,
afghans, and purchased additional fleece throws. The recipients of these have ranged from 21-28 years in age. They are rehabilitating from severe burns, amputations, and comas. The stories Susan tells are so touching. For example, the 1st blanket went to a 21 year old who lost a leg, eye, and was trying to recover speech. She said he just hugged his blanket like a teddy bear.
Susan also delivers homemade cookies and takes the mothers to lunch. Many mothers have had to leave jobs.
Fatigue sets in. Susan says they are grateful for the comfort that going to lunch with her gives them.
Our next delivery will be in June, 2009. We hope to not only send more blankets, but assist Susan in the
cost of comforting the mothers with a lunch away from the hospital.
